Paint Ideas For the Nursery: Get Creative with Baby's New Home

By Debra That Painter Lady Conrad

Transforming a room into a nursery for a new arrival is easily accomplished using paint techniques. Paint is an economical and creative way to give a bedroom a facelift in anticipation of a new baby. It's also easy to alter or update as your baby grows up.

Color Schemes :

The look of your nursery will depend strongly on your color scheme. One way to choose your scheme is to take your cue from the furnishings. If you have an antique-look cot and furniture reminiscent of the traditional nursery you may want to go for fresh, pastel colors - whites, pale pinks, blues and yellows. A special quilt for baby's bed, a picture or even a mobile may give you ideas for a color scheme. If your furnishings are modern you might opt for cheerful primary colors. Old furniture and bright colors can also go well together.

The colors you choose are probably more important for you than the baby. However, babies do have some preferences. Detail is lost on babies, so high contrast and large, bold, simple shapes are more likely to engage their attention. Even black and white would serve the purpose. Your baby will get lots of visual stimulation elsewhere and will probably spend most of his or her time in the nursery asleep, so don't take it too seriously.

Creating Visual Interest

Borders and murals are top ways to create a visual focus in a nursery. Stenciling is an ideal way to create decorations. A huge range of motifs are available to suit any theme. Today's stencils are reusable and many can be custom-sized.

Stencils will allow you to add touches such as friezes, featuring numbers or the alphabet, for example. As well as friezes, stenciled motifs can be used instead of pictures, or to create murals. A motif, or a set of related motifs, can be applied on any surface, not only walls or doors. Stenciling is effective on wooden floors and on furniture.

For the ambitious, murals can be wonderfully effective. A wall displaying a fairy tale scene can look fabulous, if you have the skill to pull it off. Instead of using hard-to-remove stickers or transfers, even novice artists can reproduce cartoon characters in paint as wall decorations.

A faux stained glass effect can be created with special glass paints applied to window panes. With the sun illuminating your design, this can be a clever way to use paint to create visual interest, and will surely engage your baby's attention.

Miscellaneous Tips

- Any bedroom should have an element of tranquility. Too much detail, too many motifs and a riot of color can spoil the effect.

- If you don't want to redecorate, consider using paint primarily to add appealing touches. Leaving the walls plain but painting other features, such as door panels, pelmets and picture and mirror frames, can create a baby-friendly environment without huge effort.

- It may seem obvious, but make sure the paints you use are non-toxic. - 20897
